Maybe you think that all we do for Ohio schools is send hundreds of millions of dollars to the Lottery Profits Education Fund (LPEF) every year. (BTW, last year it was more than $728 million. This year it will be more.)

Once a month during the school year we’re allowed to get personal through our Partners in Education (PiE) program and honor outstanding teachers and students throughout Ohio. And once a year in May we select one school as our School of the Year.

It’s fun. Check out some School of the Year videos. The drawing for this year’s big winner is this week.

Karen Schutte is a Teacher of the Month, October, 2010, from Hamiltom Elementary School, and quite a storyteller, which makes sense since she is the school librarian.

Hundreds of Ohio schools have participated since we started.

Some, like the Hamilton City Schools and North Ridgeville Schools, have made PiE a part of their monthly routine, submitting teacher and student nominations every month as both rewards and incentives. Those schools get a lot of winners, and they receive tickets to events, like Cavs, Indians, Browns, Reds, Clippers, Bengals and Crew games (and public recognition at the event) along with a certificate and a PiE merchandise.

(Imagine your favorite teacher’s face, or your great student’s smile, up on the JumboTron at the arena or stadium…)

Last year, the Rangers of North Ridgeville High School won School of the Year honors.

Their celebration included an in-school event, a $500 gift card for OfficeMax and a School of the Year trophy. Our education sponsors, including the Browns, the Indians, the Cavs, the Monsters, the Aeros and the Scrappers, all sent a mascot to the party. They also contributed merchandise. including a Joe Thomas autographed helmet, Grady Sizemore stuff… you get the idea.

It was an exciting show, too. The Cavs Scream Team performed, Cash Explosion’s David McCreary served as host and magician and a cadre of area dignitaries and media showed up. The band played, the kids cheered, the faculty wore smiles.

We love this annual opportunity to heap positive attention on those that deserve it the most – our teachers, students and schools. Come back next week to find out our School of the Year for 2010/2011! It might be one of yours…

We look forward to your schools’ participation next year. You can find PiE nomination forms at:

If you can’t get to our site, call 216.774.5688 and ask for Wanda. She’ll help you get started.
