WARREN, OH – Debra Ann Larson owns Garfield Convenient Mart, located at 270 Garfield Dr., NE in Warren. Selling Lottery for over 30 years, the Ohio Lottery is pleased to recognize Garfield Convenient Mart as Retailer-of-the-Week for the week of May 22, 2017.
Having this kind of retailer tenure, Larson said she’s seen people win enough money to pay off cars, houses, loans, weddings and college tuitions. If you tell people about these things they will want to buy tickets, she said. Telling must have included that $250,000 Mega Millions ticket that they sold in May, 2012.
The business is based on a mom and pop store concept. “The biggest thing we do, she said, is get to know people on a one on one basis. If you get to know them, their names, their kids, their likes and dislikes, they want to come back because they feel comfortable and welcomed.”
And while this is the major part of building the business, the store also has door and window signs, pamphlets with information on how to play games, banners and a designated scratch and play area with winners posted. The store uses social media too.
Lottery sales representative Pat Harrington says Debra keeps a clean store, has great displays and is very honest. Debra’s rules: never play your own tickets. She says upcoming retailers should try to be knowledgeable as possible about the machine, the games and the rules. She adds you can’t win if you don’t play, but remember it’s gaming, not a guarantee. Garfield Convenient Mart carries 54 instant games over the counter and has a weekly sales average of $9,388 for instant and online games.
Garfield Convenient Mart will be recognized on Cash Explosion®, the Ohio Lottery’s TV game show, on May 27, 2017. Trumbull County residents can tune into Cash Explosion® on WFMJ NBC Channel 21 in Youngstown. The Cash Explosion show is carried on 13 stations across the state every Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
